‘Jo Yeates may have been killed much later’

Ruben Poppelaars is a Dutch forensics specialist, mainly hired by penal lawyers. Poppelaars wrote a book on forensic evidence. He analysed the Joanna Yeates murder case, judging the facts from open source information.

Poppelaars is not convinced Joanna’s alleged DNA in Vincent’s flat proves he is guilty. “Maybe she had drinking coffee with Vincent at his house before.”

The forensics specialist is also not sure if the perpetrator indeed has been a friend or relative of Joanna - because of the fact no traces of burglary or a struggle were found: “In some cases the killer works his way in with an hoax story, attacking the victim and strangling her in a very short amount of time.”

Poppelaars has a possible explanation for the mystery of the dissapeared pizza: “It could be Joanna did not die on the night she bought te pizza, but much later. Then her stomach could have had enough time to digest the pizza.”

Joanna’s time of death is hard to establish anyways, says Poppelaars: “Her body was frozen, in effect the decomposure would have taken much longer. This is why it’s almost impossible to know if Joanna died on the nigth she was last seen.”
